Spirits & Spaces: The OTC 2 Library & The Bourbon Smash

There is a particular kind of September afternoon — the first one where the air shifts, where summer loosens its grip just enough to make you want to be inside. Not because you have to be, but because inside suddenly feels like the right place. The library at Old Topanga Canyon 2 was made for that afternoon.

Old Topanga Canyon Lot 2, Calabasas, California

The Space

Perched on a Calabasas hillside, Old Topanga Canyon 2 is a study in organic modern design — a home where straight lines and generous glazing frame the natural landscape beyond, and where every material choice feels considered, warm, and quietly intentional.

The living room library is the soul of the home. Floor-to-ceiling white oak bookshelf cubbies wrap the room in a warm, honeyed tone — organized, generous, and deeply livable. The ceiling carries the material story upward with white oak planking framed by a clean drywall border, and the floor answers in kind with a white oak chevron pattern set against a concrete border. Every surface speaks the same language.

At the center of it all, a form board concrete fireplace anchors the space — its texture raw and grounding against the warmth of the wood surrounding it. A sculptural pendant hangs overhead. Four boucle and walnut armchairs face the fire. A round coffee table sits between them, quietly inviting you to set something down and stay.

This is a room that doesn’t ask anything of you. It simply holds you.

🍹The Cocktail

Warm. Bright. The last of the lemon before the season turns.

The Bourbon Smash sits at the edge of seasons — bourbon’s warmth pulling toward fall, fresh lemon and mint holding onto something green and alive. It’s a drink with a little depth and a little ease, something you mix without fuss and sip without hurry. Classic enough to feel timeless, fresh enough to feel like right now.

Why it works:

The OTC 2 library is a room of contrasts held in perfect balance — raw concrete and refined wood, expansive shelving and intimate seating, modern lines softened by organic material. The Bourbon Smash works the same way. The edge of the bourbon, the brightness of the lemon, the coolness of the mint — nothing overpowers, everything belongs. Both the space and the drink know exactly what they are, and that confidence is the whole point.

The Bourbon Smash

Ingredients:

  • 2 oz bourbon
  • ¾ oz fresh lemon juice
  • ¾ oz simple syrup
  • 6 fresh mint leaves
  • Ice
  • Garnish: a sprig of fresh mint and a lemon wheel

Instructions:

  1. In a cocktail shaker, gently muddle the mint leaves with the simple syrup — just enough to release the oils, not so much that it turns bitter.
  2. Add the bourbon, lemon juice, and a generous handful of ice.
  3. Shake well until cold. Strain over fresh ice in a rocks glass.
  4. Garnish with a mint sprig and lemon wheel.

Sit down somewhere with good light and a book you’ve been meaning to start.

Final Sip

The best rooms have a gravity to them — a pull that makes leaving feel like the wrong choice. The OTC 2 library is one of those rooms. Pour yourself a Bourbon Smash, find a chair by the fire, and let September settle in.

Next month, Spirits & Spaces steps outside — somewhere the grapes grow and the evenings linger.
