As-hole Built Series: Me versus As-builts

A dramatic interpretation through Gifs…

Every project starts with drawings of what exists. A lot of times we generate base drawings after we do a site visit to field measure and photograph existing conditions (which you know we LOVE doing...), but sometimes, our clients already have drawings for us to work with… or so we think…

Client: Oh, I have the original drawings. You can take them and scan them to start working.

Me:

Ooooo! Yay!

I draw the plans based on the scanned drawing set. Yay! That was easy… maybe too easy.

Client via email: Oh, wait, here are some blurry images from another plan set I found at the house.

Me:

Me, looking through the photographed plan set and realizing how different they are from the original… wait is that an elevator?

Boss via email: We are going to be focusing on the main level. I put some photos in the project folder for you to look at. Can we make sure this area is accurate for the site visit on Thursday?

Me, looking through the new photos:

WTF is that??? That’s not on any of the plans!

I finish coordinating all of the information into a legible plan set for site verification on Thursday as requested. I am pretty confident that I have successfully translated all the information accurately and that I will only need to verify minimal information…

Me, as I walk into the house:

  1. Exactly, you nailed it! This is why I both love (and get crazy about) this work. It’s a huge puzzle. Just like life, what information do you believe?
