YAY! As-builts, I love them.. said no oneĀ ever!
But in the architecture world you will find yourself coming across them pretty often. What does make us happy, from as-builts, is when we figure things out or make sense of them. We will give you an example below of how this week we did something we love to do: problem solve!
So above we see the lower level floor plan of a residential project. There are a few things that we know are happening. 1. the existing back facade (red line) is flush 2. There shouldn’t be this big of a gap between the interior and foundation wall (outlined in blue). We know that by the sections from the previous permit set.
So in this section it seems that the foundation wall and interior wall are close together… also we have to remember these were drawings before construction so obviously some things could have changed but we will assume for now.
After we field verified the lower level we knew we had solid dimensions but something still wasn’t quit working out. Remember, we know the back wall is flush and looking at our interior dimensions the stair wall would need to be furred out (outlined in orange below) for that condition to be true. Now that isn’t unheard of but from the photos and being on site, it didn’t appear to have that much of a thickness.
So going back to the section and assuming the foundation and interior wall touch, there was an idea of shifting the master bedroom suite up which aligned the walls that needed to be flush and minimized the gap between the walls (highlighted in yellow above).
This made much more sense and stayed true to the things we know are happening.
After moving the master bedroom and closet we had a plan that made more sense to us and could be taken to the next site visit for verification so that we can have an accurate plan.. because I mean.. who likes an accurate plan?… EVERYONE!!!
