Elevation Study: Builder Box to Provençal Farmhouse

We have another exterior remodel on the boards!  This one is looking at transforming a builder box on the hill into a Provençal Farmhouse.  As this house is located on a significant ridgeline it is important to look at the use of appropriate natural colors and materials (we have some experience with this… check out our posts on the Ridge House).

Step one for this transformation is the stripping down of all of the added elements.  Remove the existing trellis features (sorry Doric columns you are out of here!) and stucco foam window and door trim.

Step two would be the replacement of all of the windows.  The current windows are builder grade aluminum.  Although we would love to propose new steel windows, that would probably blow the budget.  We are looking at new wood windows with mullions of course, in keeping with the concept.

Step three would be to determine the facade treatment.  There are two options we are looking at; one is a new smooth coat of plaster painted in a warm neutral and two would be the addition of a natural thin stone veneer.  This is another budgetary decision, as the thin stone veneer is much more than the plaster option.

To communicate these options, we had Matt in our office (#MAst) do some exterior elevations sketches.  Which ones do you like?
